Old Fourth Ward

Properties located in Old Fourth Ward

The Old Ward is a neighborhood that is located just east of downtown Atlanta. It is a diverse intown community rich in history with many beautifully restored Victorian and Craftsman style homes and commercial properties.

As a result of work done by organizations such as the Historic District Development Corp. and numerous private developers such as Wood Partners, Perennial Properties, Braden Fellman Group, Ltd., and Lane, there has been a dramatic increase in convenient, high quality affordable housing. This area played a significant part in Atlanta's history, namely as the place where Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, raised and preached. The Martin Luther King Memorial is one of the most visited national parks in the United States.

Many factors have played a role in the revitalization of the Old Fourth Ward. The City Hall East building, once the Sears and Roebuck Co., which currently houses the office of the Mayor, beautiful art galleries, retail businesses and public safety facilities, is currently under development as a 2 million square foot mixed use complex, which will ultimately provide retail, office and residential lofts spaces. The Martin Luther King Jr. Visitors Center and the Carter Presidential Library have created large amounts of capital as well. Visitors can attend informational tours and learn more about Atlanta's history in these establishments.

Many new loft and condo developments are being built, in turn bringing new businesses. Retail projects include Midtown Walk, which offers such major retailers as Borders, Whole Foods, Home Depot and PetSmart, among others. The Southern Dairies commercial loft conversion is home to architectural, high tech and creative firms. The Glen Iris Lofts boast adaptive reuse rental lofts in an old laundry structure, as well as new construction condominiums. The developers are currently building the Ponce Springs apartments. Braden Fellman Group, Ltd. recently completed development of its Greenwood Lofts condominium nearby and offers beautiful 1920s apartment buildings a block from City Hall East. The firm has new residential development pending.

The development of Freedom Parkway and the surrounding park space, has given residents an area to take bike rides, walk their dogs and enjoy the outdoors. Within blocks you will find local grocery stores, restaurants and entertainment, not to mention easy access to Marta railway stations and the Downtown Connector.

Location, location, location are the key words to describe the Old Fourth Ward. Experiences at nearby neighborhoods like Little Five Points, Virginia Highlands and Inman Park are within walking distance. Everything the city has to offer surrounds you. The Old Fourth Ward is a growing neighborhood with dynamic people and beautiful architecture that will remain an attractive part of Atlanta for a long time to come.
